My Uncle Charlie passed away yesterday.
He’s survived by my Aunt Marion (shown in the picture above) and sons, Reggie and Rocky Gillies.

I have always liked science fiction. One of the first books I read after “Clifford the Dog” were some old Tom Swift books…then on to Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlan, Arthur C. Clarke, Pohl Anderson, Clifford Simak…all the usual suspects.
I finally got that new heat sink for my server this afternoon. I shut the box down for an hour or two while I installed and tested to make sure the CPU wasn’t getting overly hot.
The new heatsink is by a company called Zalman, and because of its unique shape they call the heat sink a “flower” style. Why did I go with such a funky looking heat sink? Well, mainly because of the positive user comments and the fact that the heat sink comes as a kit with everything, including thermal grease.
Its been one of those days…not much I want to do, not much I have to do. So, I tuned in a movie on one of the “free” movie channels. The title sounded cheesy, but you never know: Dracula 3000- Infinite Darkness. Its a science fiction movie set in the year 3000, wherein an abandoned ship is discovered by a small group of salvage hunters.
We had a power failure today at our house while I was at work. When I got home I restarted my web server and it ran for about a minute then shut itself off. I tried this a second time, and enjoyed a repeat performance.
I play a fair number of computer games. Many of these games have a difficulty setting when you play them: Easy…Normal…Intermediate…Difficult. I usually pick either Easy or Normal.
Am I a “loser”? Fair question, but actually I often ask exactly the opposite question: are people who who play on “difficult” losers?
Tomorrow is Remembrance Day. I’m more or less anti-war, pro-peace. But I have a ton of respect for people who serve their country and put themselves in harms way.
I’m prone to forget what Remembrance Day is all about- I don’t think I’m alone in that. But I really shouldn’t ever forget- my Mom is a World War II veteran. She served overseas as part of Canada’s armed forces. A volunteer like all women, she chose to disrupt her life, to take the risk.
I just spent fifteen minutes or so trying to figure out why a blog post I edited here disappeared. Apparently, between my blog editor (Ecto) and my blog software (WordPress), I have discovered a new form of time travel.
I visit the Tom’s Hardware site periodically for computer hardware reviews. But they’ve spun off some related sites recently, including one called “Den Guru” that focuses on home electronics.

I’m not really a big “halloween” person. Our house is the one on the block with the shades pulled down and the lights out on halloween night. But I do appreciate good game design effort.
The folks at Sony have added some “halloween” cheer to the world of Norrath in EverQuest II. There is a haunted house in each of the two major in game cities, pumpkins in the streets, and a trick-or-treating contest of sorts. I like what they’ve done.
