Server outage- MariaDB and Fedora problems
My blog went down overnight without any planning on my part. When I checked it this morning, all three of my sites were showing an error that looked like this:

So much for 99% uptime…
The little server in my basement that runs all my blogs has been down since February 8th. I finally got it back up and running today and, after correcting a few hiccups, the blogs are back up as of February 12th at 10:15 PM Pacific.
What went wrong? And why did it take so long to repair? Well… that’s a bit of an interesting story, but only if you are technically minded. The short, non-technical answer: there was a problem with the storage, and I fixed it by replacing the failing part.

(more…)Another power failure, another outage
We had another power failure this morning. It started at about 5:30 am and continued until about 8:00 am, just as I was (manually) closing the garage door to go to work.
Unfortunately, my web server (which delivers this wonderful blog) failed to restart correctly when the power came back up. It seems prone to forgetting how to connect to the network after a power failure…anyway, when I got home from work I was beat and plunked myself in front of the TV. The result- I didn’t even know the server was down until just now.
