Swasticars are not as popular as Teslas
It seems like there should be some consequence when the richest man in the world behaves like a racist, buys his way into a position of power to dictate demolishment of entire government departments without legal oversight, and performs an actual Nazi salute multiple times. And it seems, at least in a small way, that Elon’s personality, behaviour, and actions are starting to turn off consumers.
People throughout the EU are voting with their wallets. Sales of all models of Tesla Swasticars in Europe have dropped off a proverbial cliff, falling 59% versus last year. This is happening while the rest of the electric car market in the EU surged ahead by over 50%. That’s a pretty clear sign that Europeans remember their history and don’t want to be associated with someone who espouses the beliefs and actions that led to World War II.
Ultra-nationalism, hatred of ‘others’, centralization of power to the ultra rich, and fawning adoration of a singular cult leader sure seems familiar to people who remember how that kind of thing goes. Donald and MAGA may not be exactly like Adolf and the Nazis, but to anyone who recalls the tens of millions who suffered and died a mere 80 years ago, they sure smell similar.
