[...] Some months ago I decided I wanted Windows Vista. I was performing my annual computer upgrade, and Vista was Release Candidate 2 at that point. Unfortunately, it wasn’t working with my games at the time. I had picked up an interest in Second Life, and Second Life (along with a number of games by ID and other manufacturers) requires OpenGL drivers. Early in Vista’s development, there was some doubt about support for OpenGL, but apparently that was all resolved early in 2006 with Microsoft incorporating full support for native OpenGL drivers through the use of installable client drivers (ICD). [...]

You are very welcome, John: it always makes me feel good when my trials and tribulations help others avoid the same :) But there are new Catalyst drivers (V6.10) available today, and they *do* include support for the X1950 XTX: I just finished installing them moments ago, and they seem to work fine.

I've updated my post above to reflect this.

I'm running some kind of custom setting: I went one step above balanced, I believe, then turned down the shadows a bit (left some on because they looked nice).

I haven't really experimented a lot- when we go bashing the first time I'll decide if I like my current settings or not.

Thanks :) I still haven't run any performance tests...I guess I'll have to do that and see how the new box stacks up to the old.

Of course, it *seems* faster: I turned on a few extra features in EQ2 like the cloth simulation and such, and didn't notice any of the lag I recall from when I tried those features on my previous machine.

Once I have some performance numbers I'll post them on the blog here.
